The oldest
surviving castle in Lviv region – The Olesky Castle (The Olesko Castle). This old
castle is located on the hill in the southeastern part of Buzhskoy lowlands.
Time of its foundation is considered XIII century.
In 1366 the city passed into the possession of
Alexander Koriatovicha.
In 1605 Olesky Castle (Olesko Castle) and the
whole district became the property of Ruska mogul Ivan Danilovich. In the old
castle also preserved the romantic
legend that tells about the gentleman Adam Zhulkevsky. He wanted to marry with daughter of Igor Danilovich.
In 1725, another Sobieski, Constantine, sold
Olesko to Zhevuskih family. This dynasty were having an unique vision of how to
manage the old castle.
But already
in 1820 The Olesky Castle (Olesko Castle) was in ruins. In 1882 the monument of national
importance was taken over by the "Society of guardianship over the
castle." The fortress also persecuted and natural disasters. In 1838, the
walls were cracked by strong earthquake .
In 1951, The Olesky Castle (The Olesko Castle)
was burned down by lightning . Its
restoration and reopening took place only in 1975. Since that time the Olesky
Castle is a branch of the Lviv Art Gallery, and one of the most interesting
museums in Ukraine.
Near the old castle is a building of the
monastery of the Order of the Capuchins (1739). Fundator Church Józef and
Antonina had a family Zhevuskih. Capuchins - a kind of monastic order, founded
at the end of the XVI century.
For many, they had associated with the name of
monk Marco d'Aviano. They say he was the first who have prepared coffee by
special recipe.
The color of the drink resembled the color
of monastic robes of Capuchin, so coffee
and got the name "cappuccino." This monk has always walked barefoot,
had a beard, which is atypical for Roman Catholics. Capuchins were famous by
chemists.
In old Castle became popular so-called
"cult of the skeleton." The Body of the dead monks were placed in one
of the five pavilions at the monastery and were buried only when they had been
decomposed to the bone.
Currently the premises are used as a
repository of numerous works of art that will later be transferred to the
exposure lock in Olesko, Podgortsi and Zolochev.
