Dominicans - the Catholics of first order , who came to our land in XV century. Constance - Hungarian Princess married Prince Leo, and under the laws of the time, she was to take the religion of husband - Orthodoxy, but for some reason it did not, and she remained Catholic. The first church of Dominicans was in the princely Lviv.
Later, after they identified the area in the medieval city, here was built Gothic church and monastery. It was at this monastery in the early XVIII century Russian King Peter I signed a contract with the Poles on joint fight against the Swedes. By the middle of the XVIII century the Gothic church collapsed, it was demolished and on its place was builded the Dominican Church in baroque style - designed by Jan de Witt.
The Dominican Church - one of the best examples of Baroque architecture of Lviv. The Dominican Church was builded to grab the viewer and cause the mystical fervor in his heart. At the front of church there are words: «SOLI DEO HONOR ET GLORIA» - «God only honor and glory » -of the powerful Dominican Order. On the left, above the window, a symbol of Dominicans - a dog that lies on the book in the jaws which is a burning torch - "the fire of faith fell heresy." The Dominicans were inquisitors in Europe by the end of the XVI century.
The interior of the Dominican church meets appearance and is a magnificent and solemn. Golden and beiges ... - Elegant and noble. In parts of the altar there are the four apostles by N. Poleyovskiy. Also the oval dome of baroque was sculptured by John Pinsel that depicting saints of the Dominican Order. Dynamism, expressive nervousness - all that is the characteristics of baroque sculpture that can be seen in
Pinsel's works . In the left aisle - epitaph of Countess Bunin-Barkovskii - working outstanding sculptor B. Torvaldsena.
The majestic complex of monastery - Dominican cathedral, is one of the symbols and decoration of the Lviv.
